Many of us find it challenging when it comes time to organize paperwork. Take a look closely to what's around you. What do you see the most? Paper... you can find paper cluttered everywhere such as in the kitchen, living room, and the bedroom. Paper of course come in many forms: letters, magazines, books, newspapers and so on.
I'm sure there are moments in your life when you need to find a certain information stored in a piece of paper and it's not to be found. You look through the papers cluttered and start searching for what you need. It can be frustrating since it takes time to find something which would have been easily found if it has a storage area.
The simple task of organizing paperwork may bring you stress, especially when the stack of paper found in your home is now a mile high. As a matter of fact, the stressful part is to figure out where and how to begin. However we all know that sometime somehow it is necessary that you organize these piles of papers or in other words you have to organize your paperwork.
First thing, before you begin on the paperwork organization, you have to come up with a system to organize. Yes, organizing paperwork may appear simple but the proper management and a systematic approach will make it a little faster and less difficult. Here are some pointers you have to remember when you start to organize your paperwork:
Before you actually start with the clutter, categorize the types of paper that you will organize so that the moment you lay your hands on a piece of document, you already have a place for it. To simplify, you may set only two options for organizing. When you pick a single sheet of paper, you have two options to throw or keep it. When you throw things away make sure to shred papers that hold valuable information. You simply don't want just anybody to know everything about the life you have. Always recycle.
You can start with the small clutter and then work on the big ones or the reverse. Begin decluttering from a small corner leading towards the middle.. That is much easier, instead of starting on a certain part and immediately moving to another area even though the previous one is not done yet. Set an area in the house where all the necessary papers can be retrieved whenever it is needed.
This tip should have been first on the list. Find time to organize your clutter. Spend a time in the day for this particular task.. Give up your favorite TV series for one week or put it on record while you declutter. You can always download all your missed episodes. Or deliberately miss that golf game on the weekend. If you don't allot time for this, it may lead to unnecessary stress in the end.
Use containers like boxes for paper storage. Tag the boxes for easy identification. As much as possible, limit your tags and categories to only a few. Or much better, you color code them. The boxes need not be the official office clutter boxes. You can make use of those shoe boxes or the computer paper boxes. And then, specify another box as the trash box. This will minimize clutter in the future, papers that are readily identifiable as garbage should automatically go to this box. Here's an example of a way to tag the boxes:
Work:For those that are relevant to work
Home: House related informations like mortgage paperwork, insurance papers
Medical: All information related to health
Bills: This way you won't miss out on payments
Misc: For things you need but don't know where to put them
Trash: Things you do not need at all
Organizing paperwork becomes easier when you put time and exert earnest effort into it.
